Meet The Pagan Tree's Characters

The Pagan Tree has been in publication for a year. There's celebratory anniversary giveaways taking place on Instagram each week in June, so if you'd like to participate, head over to @jjdoborwrites and view the Saturday stories for details.

With a year under their belt, some of the The Pagan Tree's characters are making their online debut.

Veronica Rowland believes in second chances. She's escaped a broken marriage and a controlling mother, and she's blown her divorce settlement on a house in Cornwall for the sake of a peaceful existence.

The paint's hardly dried on the walls before she's befriended by local builder, Ben, and the hamlet's insidious residents. Sensing things aren't quite what they seem, Veronica does a bit of digging and unearths a few startling secrets.

A scheming sister, a malicious love rival and a treacherous community are the least of her worries. Her past is catches up with her. History comes full circle. Veronica is in for the fight of her life.

Rachel Marshall is a hard woman, a widowed social climber and not someone to be messed with. Peeved with her daughter's impromptu move away from home, Rachel does all she can to source information of Veronica's whereabouts. How dare her wayward daughter slip out of her claws and embarrass her amongst her societal set, after everything she's done for her?

There's no love lost between mother and daughter, and their relationship is about to come to an explosive head.

Very little fazes rambunctious Shelly. At least on the surface. Beneath the makeup and big hair she has a sharp tongue and even sharper wit, but few people see the insecure softie who wants nothing more than to be loved and accepted by her father and her so-called friends.

She's pointedly misunderstood, and that really sucks.

Shelly and Veronica bond the moment they meet, literally two rabbits caught in life's headlights. Veronica is a grounding force in her life, but Shelly will do almost anything to win acceptance from others and risks betraying her friend in the process.

Against all odds, and the disapproval of the locals, Ben Shaw rebuilt Mill House from a ruin. Sure, the place has history, but it's just a house, right?

Resigned to life in the hamlet, under his sister's watchful eye, Ben wants nothing more than to settle down. But he made one mistake, and it's cost him dearly.

The arrival of the Mill's new owner sets the cat amongst the pigeons, and his reputation as a lady's man does little to endear him to strung-out Veronica. She's like a breath of fresh air, but they both have devastating secrets.

Veronica might be the one for him, but can he go against his sister and commit to this relationship?

Precocious Penny, Ben's twelve-year-old know-it-all niece, can see things others can't.

She's inquisitive and has no qualms digging through people's possessions. She's not looking for anything in particular, but mischief has a way of finding her, and she has a way of finding out people's secrets.

Penny's age allows her to operate under the radar and she's quick to discover that Veronica might not be who she says she is. Veronica suspects that the kid is up to no good, but Penny's uncanny ability means she knows more then she lets on.
